From a patient’s perspective there can be a great deal of confusion with what sedation dentistry actually is.  There are many marketing terms that sedation dentistry is known by including “sleep dentistry”, “twilight sedation”, “oral sedation”, “the pill”, and many others.  Sedation dentistry in its simplest terms is the administration of a medicine to produce a sedative effect that allows a patient to be relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedure.  That said there are different levels of sedation each requiring a different level of certification and training in the state of Florida.

The most commonly practiced form of sedation in dentistry is “anxiolysis”.  It is the lightest form of sedation and currently, in the state of Florida, no additional training is required to administer. This level of sedation is usually achieved by giving a patient a single dose of an oral sedative like Valium or Halcyon. This is typically a very safe procedure however for patients with higher levels of anxiety a deeper form of sedation is needed.

The next level of sedation is called “conscious sedation”.  This is a deeper form of sedation where the sedative meds are given intravenously.  Here the dentist has more control over your level of comfort and can customize the dosage for the individual.  Dentists who administer conscious sedation undergo additional training usually in the form of a residency after dental school.   Conscious sedation is also considered a very safe and predictable procedure.  Additionally the medicines given during conscious sedation tend to have shorter durations allowing the patient to recover from the sedation more quickly.

If you are a patient considering some form of sedation for your dental work there are specific questions you should ask of your dental team.  First and foremost what form of sedation is right for you?  What additional training has the dentist received? Does the dentist have all the necessary emergency equipment available in his office should the need arise?  Lastly be sure to follow all preoperative and post operative instructions the dentist gives you.   This will ensure that you have a positive sedation experience.
