If you are experiencing frequent headaches, jaw pain, or regular stiffness in your jaw, these could indicate a problem with TMD, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction. TMD is often caused by a combination of stress and an improperly aligned bite (known as malocclusion).
At Dr. Matthew Henry’s Vero Beach dental office, we have several non-invasive solutions for treating TMD, chief among them an oral appliance. Custom-made precisely for your smile, an oral appliance helps by correcting your bite, alleviating the strain your temporomandibular joints are experiencing in the process.
But an oral appliance isn’t the only method of treatment Dr. Henry can recommend. Learning how to alleviating the stress in your life can go a long ways toward alleviating painful symptoms.
Want to find out more about TMD and malocclusion? We’d be happy to talk to you about them. Our Vero Beach office checks every patient for signs of TMD, bruxism, and malocclusion at every regular appointment.
Call us today if you live in Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, and want to schedule an appointment with Dr. Henry. We understand your pain and can help you find the relief you have been looking for.

Are our gums swollen or tender? Do they bleed when you brush? Both of these are symptoms of gum disease.
Gum disease is caused by a combination of built up tartar, bacteria, and decaying food particles. If left untreated, gum disease can dramatically affect not just your smile but your overall health as well.
That’s where Beachside Dental and Dr. Henry come in. Through regular dental visits with us, it’s possible for Dr. Henry to spot these troubling signs early on, before they develop into a more serious problem. We can even provide relief for patients through a variety of treatment options.
Sometimes treatment is as simple as brushing and flossing more thoroughly, or changing from one oral care product to another.
Other times, though, non-surgical therapy may be necessary. At Dr. Henry’s Vero Beach office, we offer scaling, root planing, and antibiotic therapy to help patients from Indian River Shores County treat more serious cases of gum disease.
To find out more about any of these treatment options, or to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Henry, call our Vero Beach dental office. We recommend that patients from Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, and surrounding locations see us every six months for regular visits.
Give us a call today.

Well I have finally signed up for the first core curriculum at the Dawson Academy www.thedawsonacademy.com and the first core course at the Pankey Institute www.pankey.org . This represents the beginning of a 5 year goal of almost 300 hours of continuing education focused on comprehensive dentistry, tempromandibular dysfunction, occlusion, and practice management. As dentists the process of learning never ends but continues on every year and every day in a constant cycle of self evaluation, education, and personal growth. My ultimate goal is to provide my patients with the best care possible and serve my community and ultimately the practice of dentistry to the best of my ability.
Does the thought of going to the dentist make you cringe? Do you often cancel or put off work that you know needs to be done due to anxiety or nervousness? If you said yes to either of these questions you are not alone. Dental anxiety is a serious condition affecting a significant portion of our population. In 2005, a study in the Journal of the American Dental Association has placed dental anxiety rates in our country at about 12-15% of all dental patients. In response to this demand the concept of “sedation dentistry” has slowly been making its way into many dental practices across our nation.
From a patient’s perspective there can be a great deal of confusion with what sedation dentistry actually is. There are many marketing terms that sedation dentistry is known by including “sleep dentistry”, “twilight sedation”, “oral sedation”, “the pill”, and many others. Sedation dentistry in its simplest terms is the administration of a medicine to produce a sedative effect that allows a patient to be relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedure. That said there are different levels of sedation each requiring a different level of certification and training in the state of Florida.
The most commonly practiced form of sedation in dentistry is “anxiolysis”. It is the lightest form of sedation and currently, in the state of Florida, no additional training is required to administer. This level of sedation is usually achieved by giving a patient a single dose of an oral sedative like Valium or Halcyon. This is typically a very safe procedure however for patients with higher levels of anxiety a deeper form of sedation is needed.
The next level of sedation is called “conscious sedation”. This is a deeper form of sedation where the sedative meds are given intravenously. Here the dentist has more control over your level of comfort and can customize the dosage for the individual. Dentists who administer conscious sedation undergo additional training usually in the form of a residency after dental school. Conscious sedation is also considered a very safe and predictable procedure. Additionally the medicines given during conscious sedation tend to have shorter durations allowing the patient to recover from the sedation more quickly.
If you are a patient considering some form of sedation for your dental work there are specific questions you should ask of your dental team. First and foremost what form of sedation is right for you? What additional training has the dentist received? Does the dentist have all the necessary emergency equipment available in his office should the need arise? Lastly be sure to follow all preoperative and post operative instructions the dentist gives you. This will ensure that you have a positive sedation experience.
My office manager came across this video and I think it really exemplifies the general mission at Beachside Dental which is prevention. Your regular exam and cleaning is possibly the most important appointment you can make in our office because during this examination process we can intercept small problems before they become large ones as well as give you the tools and information to prevent problems from happening at all. The cheapest cavity you will ever treat will be the one that never happened.

Hello again,
New developments at Beachside Dental. For the last month now I’ve been in the market for a new laboratory and I believe I have found one that delivers the high quality that I require at a more affordable price. Consequently I am passing the savings on to my patients. Effective immediately we have lowered our fees for most laboratory procedures (crowns, inlays, onlays, implant crowns, and abutments). I strongly believe in fees that are reasonable and fair and I want my patients to know that this laboratory change is the result of the feedback that you have given me. As always this is your practice as much as it is mine and I welcome any critique or comment that will help us to serve our patients better.
Well, here goes.
This is my inaugural blog post so bear with me. The first goal of this blog is to keep my patients and the general public informed of the happenings inside our office. I also would like to use this forum to discuss relevant topics in dentistry and perhaps post some of my recent cases for critique. Also I am more than open to answering questions or discussing topics that you, the patient, are interested in so please feel free to leave me a comment or drop me an email at drhenry@beachsidedental.com
Happy flossing,
M.
